Technical Tours

Learn from local projects to expand your knowledge and earn PDHs. Register early so you won't miss your chance to participate. Last year's tours sold out early.

Please note:

  • Tours are available on a first-come, first-served bases and have limited capacity.
  • A separate registration fee is required to offset the costs involved with the tours.
  • ASCE reserves the right to cancel a tour if the minimum registration is not met and a refund will be issued after the convention, if applicable.
  • Tours will depart from the Oregon Convention Center, (OCC) Holladay Lobby to take you to your destination. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes early, as buses will leave on time.

Please wear closed-toed shoes for all technical tours. All participants must be 18 years or older.

Portland International Airport: Behind the Scenes

Time: 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Portland International Airport (PDX) is owned and operated by the Port of Portland. PDX is home to 17 domestic and international passenger airlines and serves 16 million passengers annually. PDX was voted the best U.S. airport in Travel+Leisure World’s Best Awards reader poll in 2013, 2014, and 2015. The tour will highlight recently completed and current improvements to the terminal complex that includes the new baggage handling and screening system, and a new commuter terminal and quick turnaround rental car facility that will be under construction.

The tour will also highlight the unique water and energy conservation features of the Port of Portland LEED Platinum headquarters building located on the top of the long term parking garage. The 200,000 ft2 headquarters building includes a “living machine” on-site waste water treatment facility that reclaims 70% of the water and a ground source heat pump coupled with a radiant heating and cooling panels that uses 30% less energy than a conventional office building.

In addition to the Terminal Complex facilities the tour offers a unique opportunity to tour the airfield and learn about the operations and related technical issues associated with operating and maintaining the airport. PDX airport includes two parallel runways and one cross wind runway, that are shared with the Oregon Air National guard located on the south side of the airport. The airfield tour will also focus on recently completed runway and taxiway improvements, storm water collection and “state of the art” deicing treatment facility, and the Port’s wildlife management program.

The bus will depart from the Oregon Convention Center, Holladay Lobby. Boarding will start at 12:45 p.m. and promptly depart at 1:00 p.m. The bus will return to the OCC at 4:00 p.m.

Columbia River Scenic Highway and Bonneville Dam

Time: 12:00 – 4:30 p.m.

The Columbia River Scenic Highway celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2016. This marvel of engineering has been designated a National Historic Landmark and National Scenic Byway. Learn more about the history of the “King of Roads” and the visionaries behind it as you take in breathtaking views of the Columbia Gorge and numerous waterfalls. The tour will conclude with a stop at the Bonneville Dam where you can explore the visitor center, fish ladders, and navigation locks.

A box lunch will be provided on the bus. The bus will depart from the OCC Holladay lobby. boarding will start at 11:45 a.m. and promptly depart at 12:00 p.m. The bus will return to the OCC at 4:30 p.m.

Oregon Convention Center Sustainability Tour

Times: 1:30 - 2:30 p.m., 2:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Enjoy a detailed tour of the Oregon Convention Center’s operation focusing on projects and programs that have made the facility very efficient. Learn about our solar power, recycling/composting, lighting projects and aggressive donation programs, along with developing and maintaining partnerships with Pacificwild catering, Blanchet House, Energy Trust of Oregon, NW Natural Gas, Pacific Power, Solar City and many others. Over 30 efficiency projects with proven energy savings have earned OCC, LEED Platinum certification in 2014. 

This is a one-hour walking tour of the OCC, be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Tours will start at the Visitor Information Desk in the MLK Lobby, plan to arrive 15 minutes before the start time.

Willamette River Bridges Tour
(2.0 PDHs)

Date: Wednesday, September 28
Time: 12:45 – 3:30 p.m.

Take a unique tour of Portland’s Bridges on the Portland Spirit Explorer. Downtown Portland has a wide array of historic and unique bridges crossing the Willamette River including vertical lift and bascule spans, an independent double vertical lift, a Rall-wheel bascule, the world’s second longest steel tied arch bridge, and a new cable-stayed bridge for transit, bikes and pedestrians only. The cruise will be narrated by Sharon Wood Wortman and Ed Wortman, well-known local authors of the Portland Bridge Book and the newly released Big & Awesome Bridges of Portland & Vancouver, designed for elementary school programs.

The tour group will meet in the OCC Holladay Lobby at 12:15 p.m. to make their way over to the Salmon Street Springs Dock via transit, which will take approximately 20 minutes. Boarding is at SW Naito Parkway and SW Salmon Street in the Tom McCall Waterfront Park, near the Salmon Springs Fountain. We recommend wearing warm clothes and having a rain jacket with you.
