ASCE Convention is going to Portland, Oregon in 2016! Meet your colleagues and discover why Portland was named America's Greenest City by Travel + Leisure in 2015.
Known as "The City of Roses." Not only do roses naturally grow like crazy in the city of Portland, multiple historical figures have added to the city by growing their own. In 1888, the Episcopal Church held the first convention dedicated to roses, which led to traditional rose festivals being held every year in conjunction with the Lewis and Clark Exposition. Leo Samuel, founded the Oregon Life Insurance Company in 1906, and would grow roses outside his home, with shears so people walking by could cut one for themselves.
Portland is a walking-friendly city full of business owners and individuals that continue to grow roses, and participate in the flourishing annual Portland Rose Festival.

In September and October, days in Portland tend to be mild and partly sunny. As the weather starts to cool, rain becomes more common and the leaves turn. Average temperatures range from the mid 50s to high 60s. Be sure to pack layers, a rain jacket and an umbrella.
The closest airport is Portland International Airport (PDX). The airport is located 10 miles from the DoubleTree by Hilton Portland and is conveniently connected to the city center via MAX light rail train.
The Downtown Airport Express by Blue Star runs every 30 minutes and costs $14 one-way and $24 round-trip to Lloyd Center hotels. When leaving the airport, you can find the Downtown Airport Express on the terminal's lower roadway (outside of baggage claim) on the far side of Island #2, closer to the parking garage.
Portland has bus, light rail, commuter rail, and streetcar options to take you around the city.
At the heart of Portland's world-class public transportation system is MAX Light Rail, with 84 stations and 52 miles of track connecting the city, airport and region.
MAX has five lines, all of which run through downtown:
The Red Line is the easiest way to travel to and from the airport. Here are some quick facts:
How to Ride MAX
You must have a validated ticket, bus transfer receipt or pass before boarding MAX. Ticket machines and validators are located at the station. There are no fare boxes on board MAX. Before boarding, buy your ticket from a ticket machine or with the mobile ticketing app -- or validate your previously purchased ticket in the validator located near the ticket machine. A validated ticket is your proof of payment, good for two hours on MAX, buses and the Portland Streetcar. (Full-day tickets are also available.) Keep your ticket until you have completed your trip. Note: MAX ticket machines return change in coins, so small bills are recommended. If you have a TriMet pass or bus transfer receipt, just board MAX and have a seat. (Check expiration time at the top of your transfer; you may board until that time.)
In 2001, Portland built the nation's first modern-day streetcar: the sleek and modern Portland Streetcar. The original line, now known as the NS line, travels through downtown from Portland State University to the Nob Hill neighborhood via the popular shopping and dining area of the Pearl District.
Two lines, the A Loop and the B Loop, were also recently opened and provide service across the city's newest bridge, Tilikum Crossing. The A Loop runs clockwise and connects the east and west sides of the city through the Pearl District, Broadway Bridge, Lloyd District, OMSI, Tilikum Crossing and Portland State University. The B Loop passes through the same locations, but moves counter-clockwise.
Hours & Frequency
The streetcar operates from 5:30 a.m. - 11:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 11:30 p.m. Saturday, and 7:30 a.m. - 10:30 p.m. Sunday. The streetcar runs approximately every 15 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays and every 20 minutes on Sunday. Arrival times are posted on real-time electronic signs at most streetcar stops.
